House Flies

House flies are very common household pests. Adults have a very distinctive appearance; a dull gray body with black vertical lines on top, and a single gold stripe and a single silver stripe on their face. Adults grow to be between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch in length. Their worm-like larvae are off-white and have pointed heads. Their pupae are dark brown, round, and taper from front to back.

Where are house flies found?

House flies, as their name suggests, are most often found living in Quad City homes, finding their way in while in search of food and water. They enter inside through torn screens, gaps around windows and doors, open doors and windows, and cracks found in your building's foundation. Many things attract house flies to properties including garbage, animal feces, compost piles, and leaky pipes and outdoor fixtures.

What do house flies eat?

House flies are scavengers and feed on a large variety of “food”. They feed on food they find in pantries and kitchens. House flies eat pet food, excrement, carcasses, and garbage. They can only ingest liquids, so they regurgitate their saliva onto the food they are going to consume. After the food has been liquefied, they suck it up with their specialized spongy mouthparts.
