House
Sparrow
(Passer Domesticus)
This is the number two urban pest bird. This bird was
introduced into the United States, and quickly spread through the entire country
due to the lack of any natural predators, as well as it's abilities to adapt to
new surroundings and structures. Our sparrow is not a true Sparrow, but
rather, a member of the weaverbird family. These species readily adapt to
our structures and landscape, nesting under eaves and in ivy covering
walls. They readily nest in trees, and build very intricate nests, with
much nesting material. Nests can clog gutters, and the droppings contain
uric acid, which damages paint and other finishes.
