There are some pests where every subspecies is dangerous or can cause some form of harm. For instance, all cockroaches, ants, and rats are hazardous to have around because they carry illness-causing bacteria. Bees and wasps can all sting humans and cause allergic reactions. Most mosquitoes can transmit disease, as they suck blood. In these cases, some types can do additional damage, such as ruin property.

When it comes to spiders, they’re known for having venom and being able to bite. However, the level of risk varies widely. It’s important to know what spiders are common in Rock Island, so you can get ready for prevention and understand what you’re dealing with. Further, you can find out how Quik-Kill Pest Eliminators can be of service.

Spiders in Rock Island: Appearance, Behavior, & Risks

Black widow, brown recluse, yellow sac, wolf, cellar, and house spiders all frequent the area. Black widow spiders have black, glossy bodies that are ⅛ to 3/8 of an inch long. Females can reach 1/2 of an inch. You’ll notice these bugs have a red stomach mark shaped like an hourglass. They prefer to be outdoors, where they can nest in high grass, firewood, and debris. If they go inside, it’s to find other insects to eat. They’re typically found in garages, basements, and closets. Should you disturb them, you might be bitten. Their venom has neurotoxins in it that will disrupt the nervous system.

Brown recluse spiders are tan or brown, hence their name. They max in size at around ½ of an inch and have long, skinny legs. They too have a distinct body mark: one shaped like a violin on their dorsum. Just like the black widows, brown recluses surround organic matter and consume bugs. If they get indoors, they’ll be in your attic, cellar, crawlspace, or cabinets. These pests reproduce fast. Their poisonous bites can lead to fever, nausea, and skin lesions.

Yellow sac, wolf, cellar, and house spiders are considered less deadly and less prone to bite:

  • Yellow sac spiders: Adults are around 1/4 of an inch long, with yellow or beige bodies. Some have a green tint. Outdoors, they’ll web in greenery. Indoors, they’ll be around basements, sinks, and appliances. Their bites cause redness and pain that is both local and temporary.

  • Wolf spiders: These spiders have black or brown bodies, 3/8 to 1⅜ of an inch in size. They have a lot of hair and eight thin legs. Leaves, grass, and wood piles are where they’ll nest. When it gets cold, they may go indoors.

  • Cellar spiders: These critters grow to be 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch. They’re gray, brown, or yellow, and have eight scrawny legs. Dark and moist spaces are what they prefer. You’ll see them in cellars, basements, sheds, and under sinks.

  • House spiders: The bodies of these gray or yellow-brown spiders are 1/8 to 3/8 of an inch long, with chevron markings. They usually inhabit outbuildings and homes.
