Have you read the book Charlotte's Web? Or perhaps seen the movie? If you have, then you know it is a story about a spider named Charlotte who lives in a barn full of farm animals. But those animals were not what attracted Charlotte to that barn. What attracted her was the bugs, namely the flies. If you are seeing spiders around your home or business, or inside your structure, it is certain those spiders are not alone. If you have spiders, you likely have insects that spiders eat, and probably other pests as well. Here are some pests that spiders eat and some of the problems they cause.

Flies

Flies are not only a nuisance, but they can also contaminate foods by crawling around in garbage and then landing on your lunch.

Ants

While most ants that get into structures are simply a nuisance, some types of ants can be destructive to your home. Carpenter ants, for example, carve out tunnels and galleries in the wooden structures of a building, costing U.S. home and business owners hundreds of millions of dollars annually.

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes not only cause itchy red welts on the skin that can plague you for weeks, but they are also known to transmit diseases such as Zika virus, West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus, dengue, and malaria.

Cockroaches

These filthy insects are famous for tainting foods and quickly multiplying. They are known vectors for diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, and plague, and they exacerbate asthmatic conditions in individuals.

A Few Prevention Tips

  • Make sure all trash is stored in containers with tight-fitting lids to keep smells in and pests out.

  • Don't leave pet or human food outside that will attract pests.

  • Clear out any leaf piles or other yard waste. Pests love to hide under and inside debris.

  • Trim bushes and other vegetation back away from your perimeter so the area can dry out. Pests are attracted to moist areas.

  • Seal up any holes found in your foundation or walls where pests can squeeze in.

  • Keep your home clean of water sources and food particles.
