Time to Start Thinking about Mosquitoes

March 30, 2018

mosquito bite

It’s been a long winter, and our break from those annoying mosquito problems is nearly over. While you may not be seeing too many of these blood thirsty pests yet, now is the time to start thinking about mosquito control and to take steps toward protecting your friends and family from the dangers they pose.

It’s no secret that mosquitoes can cause a plethora of diseases to people. These diseases are the cause of something much worse than the itchy red marks they leave behind. Mosquitoes are responsible for transmitting these diseases to over 700 million people and for causing at least 1 million deaths every year. Mosquito-borne illnesses are more common in underdeveloped countries, but due to the increase of travel, they are becoming prominent in the United States as well. Among these diseases are:

  • Malaria - Causes high temperatures, sweats, chills, headaches, vomiting, muscle pain, and diarrhea. It is a lethal disease if left untreated.

  • Dengue fever - Causes high fever, severe headaches, eye pain, muscle pain, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, rash, and nosebleeds. There is no cure for this disease currently.

  • West Nile virus - Causes fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and a rash. Most people can recover from this disease, but the symptoms can hold on for months.

  • Yellow fever - Causes fever, headache, chills, back pain, fatigue, appetite loss, muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting. A  more severe case can also include jaundice, abdominal pain, eye and mouth bleeding, and bloody vomit, in which case can be fatal.

Needless to say, the best way to avoid these diseases is to avoid mosquitoes, and the best way to do that is by preventing mosquito bites. Insect repellent can be somewhat effective by applying it each time you go outside. Avoid going outdoors at dusk and dawn, and cover up in light colored long sleeves and pants. Mosquito netting is necessary if you plan to sleep outdoors or where mosquitoes cannot be kept out. Remove all standing water in your yard where mosquitoes can breed.
