Problems Fall Spiders Bring Inside With Them

The presence of crisp colorful leaves, the arrival of apple picking season, cool fall nights in the Quad Cities all indicate that fall has arrived. But this can also cause more spiders to show up indoors, but maybe not for the reasons you think. Spiders aren’t coming indoors because it’s getting cold out. Likely they’re not coming indoors at all--because they have been inside all along. If that thought doesn’t send a shiver up your spine, you are one of the lucky ones. There are countless memes and stories about people burning their whole houses down if a spider is spotted indoors. We don’t suggest going to that extreme, but we do want to share some basic spider tips for fall!

As the weather changes in Moline, many nuisance pests such as flies, mosquitoes, and ants start to die off. This can be a problem for spiders as these pests often make a tasty meal for them. Spiders may begin moving around more as they search for food which is why you may see them more frequently. Fall also happens to coincide with the mating cycle of many species of spiders. For this reason, spiders are more active as they seek a mate. Therefore it might seem like they’ve suddenly invaded your house. You might notice any number of species of spiders indoors including black widows, brown recluse, cellar spiders, house spiders, wolf spiders and yellow sack spiders in the East Moline area.

There is one exception to the idea that spiders aren’t coming inside to seek warmth in the fall, and that is the brown recluse spider. You are probably thinking “great, one of the few venomous spiders wants to get inside my home." Really, they are just seeking an out-of-the-way dark and undisturbed space to hide and stay warm and gather some food.

While most spiders are relatively harmless and even the venomous ones are unlikely to bite unless defending themselves, people aren’t usually happy with spiders in their homes. There is a good reason for this. They are creepy. But beyond that, they can attract other pests or be an indication that other pests are present. They can also trigger allergies and contaminate food.
