Have you ever noticed that when we are in the throes of summer’s heat, all we can do is complain about how hot it is and wish for the cooler breezes of winter; but once we are in the dead of winter, we long for the hot, humid days of summer. Even during springtime, we long for summer so we can spend some time at the lake; and when the leaves begin to fall, we wish the snow was flying so we could get back on those skis. Do we ever really just stop and enjoy the season? Probably not as often as we should. But we are not alone. Pests like rodents never stop and enjoy the season either. They are constantly mindful that the seasons are short and that they must prepare for the oncoming one in order to be ready to face its challenges.

We are willing to bet that now that fall is thinking about changing into winter, your thoughts are no longer consumed by mosquitoes. Zika virus, West Nile, or any of the other repercussions that mosquitoes present can finally go on the back burner when accompanying the kids out to wait for the bus. But for the cautious, these thoughts have been replaced by the worry over disease-carrying mice, rats, and other rodents that become a danger this time of year. After all, if they can find a way into your home or business, it is likely that they will settle in for the long haul, spreading germs and disease throughout as they travel from their nest to your kitchen or break room and back. And, although the unsanitary conditions that mice cause are of great concern in and of themselves, there are other reasons why you do not want to spend the winter with rodents. Each of these troublesome pests often come with several dozen tiny little friends - friends that can carry and spread diseases of their own, like fleas, ticks, and mites. On top of this the rodents' habit of constantly chewing on items like wood, pipes, wires, insulation, and personal items can cost you thousands in repair and replacement costs.

Preventing an infestation can take some work, but it is a job well worth the time. Begin by keeping your lawn trimmed and removing debris from your yard. Put bird feeders away for the winter or move them a safe distance from your home. Next, you will want to make sure that any fallen fruit or vegetables from trees and gardens are picked up and disposed of properly. While you are working in your yard, glance over and inspect the outside of your home. Repair any loose shingles, roof tiles, or siding that you find; seal eaves, vents, and utility entrances; and install door sweeps under all exterior doors. Finally, fill all holes or gaps that you find in your foundation, and make sure that trash cans are stored away from your home and that they are equipped with tight-fitting lids.
