Why Yellow Jackets Are Making A Resurgence

There is nothing better than an unexpected snap of warm weather during the fall in the Quad Cities. We get a few extra days of picnicking outside, maybe get to take a dip in the pool, and savor the warmth before the cold winter sets in. But, unfortunately, our enjoyment of the outdoors can be hampered by the resurgence of yellow jackets. Unlike many other pests that slow down and begin to die off as fall approaches, yellow jackets can become extremely active and noticeably more aggressive.

There are a few reasons why yellow jackets become more problematic in the fall. One: the numbers in their colonies have multiplied. When they start out in the spring, they have a small colony of workers and a queen. The queen lays her eggs and eventually those babies hatch and mature. The nests become full of busy working yellow jackets. Two: as winter approaches the workers know they must protect their queen and they get busy at this task. They continue to need food, and your fall picnic and outdoor trash are prime targets. The combination of these two factors means that you have a lot of aggressive yellow jackets in protective attack mode in Davenport!

The biggest problem with yellow jackets is that they are stinging insects and they are aggressive. While some stinging insects tend to leave you alone if you leave them alone, yellow jackets do not do this. They are very protective of their nests and if you disturb or even go near them, they are likely to sting. The sting of a yellow jacket is painful. One or two stings can be treated with an over-the-counter pain relief medicine and some ice. But you run into a serious problem if you are an individual who is allergic to yellow jacket stings and may experience a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Even for people who are not allergic to these stings, getting stung multiple times by a colony can be problematic, to say the least. The amount of venom injected from multiple stings can cause a severe reaction. It’s important to be evaluated by a medical professional immediately if you suspect an allergic reaction.

Because of how aggressive yellow jackets can be, it’s important to contact a professional pest control company to destroy a nest should you find one on your Davenport property. You don’t want to run the risk of getting stung trying to remove it yourself.
