Should I Still Be Worried About Termites?

A lot of people think fall in Illinois and Iowa is a great time of year because all the bugs that were around in the summer finally go away. In many cases, these people are right. A lot of insects are seasonal and once the weather gets cold, they disappear until the following year.

However, that is not the case with all bugs. Some remain active all through the fall and winter by finding a warm place, such as your home, to live. That’s why you often see an increase in pests, such as spiders, in your house during this time of year. They’re looking for a place to survive the winter.

There are other pests that are sneakier though. You may not see any trace of them and assume that they too disappear during fall and winter, while all the while they’re active in your home perhaps causing unseen, but serious, damage.

Termites are year-round pests and they are nothing to mess around with. When living outdoors, they’ll dig deep into the ground in the winter in order to survive. However, if they’ve made it into your house, they can remain as active as they are in summer, outdoors, because of the climate-controlled setting. And active termites are destructive termites.

The biggest problem with termites is that the vast majority of their work is done out of sight. They build their nests within the wood they feed on, so it’s rare to see them out in the open. Often the major signs of a termite infestation occur after the damage they’ve caused has become extensive. Given enough time, they can compromise the structural integrity of your home, making it unsafe to live in.

If the idea of termites getting into your Illinois or Iowa home makes you nervous, it should. The best thing you can do is take preventative measures to ensure that they never get inside. If you think they may have already gotten inside, there are still things you can do to eliminate them and hopefully take care of the problem in its early stages to avoid the worst of the damage they cause.

Quik-Kill Pest Eliminators is a supplier and installer of the Sentricon® System with Always Active™. Sentricon® with Always Active™ uses termite baiting stations that are placed in the soil around your home to disrupt the typical process worker termites use for locating food. Instead of entering your home, they’ll be attracted to the bait. They’ll not only consume it, but will also take it back to the rest of their colony, which will ensure the elimination not only of the workers, but also of the soldiers, the reproductives, and the queen. Once a colony has been eradicated, Sentricon® with Always Active™ continues to monitor for any other termite activity, ensuring that your home remains safe.

Whether you suspect termites have entered your home or not, give Quik-Kill a call. We will provide a free, no-obligation termite inspection, then develop a customized plan for your unique situation.
