Citronella Ants
What do citronella ants look like?

Adult citronella ant workers and winged reproductive females are golden yellow, while the winged males are black. Workers grow to be about 1/4 of an inch in length. The reproductive females and males are larger in size and can grow to be between 3/8 and 5/8 of an inch in length. These ants can also be identified by the potent lemon-like odor that they give off when they feel threatened. The odor becomes even stronger when these ants are crushed.
Where are citronella ants found?
Citronella ants can be found nesting in the soil underneath rocks, logs, landscaping ties, concrete slabs, porches, and next to building foundations. Inside a home, they are drawn to areas that retain moisture and to water-damaged wood; therefore, they can be found nesting in crawlspaces and other similar areas. These ants are mainly subterranean; because of this, workers are usually not seen crawling throughout homes. However, it is very common for Quad City homeowners to find the winged reproductives (swarmers) in large numbers flying throughout their home in early to mid-spring.
What do citronella ants eat?
Citronella ants do not eat a varied diet like a lot of other types of ants. You won’t find workers traveling through your kitchen feasting on cake crumbs. Citronella ants, instead, feed primarily on a sweet substance call honeydew which is produced and left behind by aphids and mealybugs.
DIY citronella ant prevention and control tips
Citronella ants are attracted to high moisture areas, so if you want to prevent these pests you should correct any moisture issues inside your building. Our pest control team also recommends sealing cracks and other openings found in the foundation of your home or commercial building. Fix cracks in concrete porches and slabs located on your property. You should also remove piles of rocks, logs, and similar debris that they could use to nest underneath, and remove or repair wood in your home that has been damaged by water.
