The Ants That Call Illinois Home
Do you know what the number one nuisance pest in the United States is? Yup. Ants. That's because we have a lot of ants in the U.S. and those ants have some pretty good reasons for coming into our homes. Let's take a look at some of the pest ant species that call Illinois home and see what we can learn that will help keep them out.
The most common house-invading, nuisance ants in Illinois are:
Pavement Ants (Tetramorium caespitum)
Workers of this species are 1/8 of an inch long, dark brown in color, and have two nodes between their thorax and abdomen. Colonies created by pavement ants typically max out at around 30,000 individuals.
Pharaoh Ants (Monomorium pharaonis)
Workers of this species are about 1/16 of an inch long, are yellowish-brown in color, and have two nodes between their thorax and abdomen. Colonies created by pharaoh ants typically max out above 100,000 individuals.
Large Yellow Ants (Acanthomyops interjectus)
Workers of this species are 1/4 of an inch long, are a yellowish-brown color, and have a single node between their thorax and abdomen. Colonies created by large yellow ants typically max out at 5,000 individuals.
Odorous House Ants (Tapinoma sessile)
Workers of this species are 1/8 of an inch long, are dark brown in color, and have one node between their thorax and abdomen. Colonies created by odorous house ants typically max out at about 10,000 individuals.
Small Honey Ants (Prenolepis imparis)
Workers of this species are 1/8 of an inch long, are dark brown in color, and have one node between their thorax and abdomen. Colonies created by small honey ants typically max out at 5,000 individuals.
Why These Ants Get In
Inside our homes, ants are often able to find food and water sources. While each of these ant species may have slightly different diets, they all come inside for food. Some ants have a sweet tooth and go straight for the pantry. Some ants prefer protein and will dine on dead bugs in your wall voids. Most ants can find a meal inside a bag of trash, so it is important to keep your trash sealed (both inside and outside of the home).
Ants will also look for sources of water. They can get a drink from the condensation on a pipe or the tiny blotches of water on a shower floor. They are likely to hang out in the areas of a home that are being damaged by moisture.
Another reason ants come into our homes is because we let them. We can have an impact on ant infestations by doing routine inspections of our foundation walls and exterior walls, especially around plumbing, wire conduit, air conditioning units, window and door frames, and garage door seals. Patch any gaps, holes, cracks, or entry points you find to help deter these tiny pests from entering.
If sealing your walls and securing food sources isn't enough to keep ants out, routine treatments are required. It is best to have these treatments done by a professional.
